The X’s and O’s of the game

To understand European roulette, you need to understand how the game works. It’s made of up two parts, the roulette wheel and the roulette board. In total, there are 37 numbers on a roulette board in European roulette (0-36), and each number has a corresponding color. In addition to these numbers, there are also other bets that you can place scattered throughout the board.

On the wheel, there is a slot for each of the numbers that is on the roulette board. The dealer will spin the ball and the wheel at the start of each turn. Wherever the ball lands is where the corresponding payouts on the board will be made. The nice part about European roulette is that each spin of the wheel is independent of each other, with a new game starting with each spin.

The wide variety of bets

Another reason people love playing European roulette is the wide selection of bets that you can choose from. There are two basic categories of bets that you can make – either a bet on the “inside” of the game board, where the numbers are located, or on the “outside.” The inside bets have different odds based on how you wager. These include:

  • Single number: 35-1
  • Two-number combo: 17-1
  • Three-number combo: 11-1
  • Four-number combo: 8-1
  • Five-number combo: 6-1
  • Six-number combo: 5-1

Outside bets (such as Even or Odd numbers) have different odds, which are:

  • Column (1st, 2nd or 3rd): 2-1
  • A dozen (1st, 2nd or 3rd): 2-1
  • Even or odd: 1-1
  • Red or black: 1-1
  • 1-18 or 19-36: 1-1

The layout of the roulette wheel is funky

This game has 37 “pockets” on the wheel, which corresponds with a number that’s listed on the roulette wheel. The pockets are not listed in chronological order. Instead, they are arranged in an odd patter, because it makes it more random where the ball lands and, therefore, harder for the player to predict where it will land on each spin. On a European roulette wheel, the numbers appear clockwise: 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10,5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26

The numbers on the table are chronological

Luckily for the player, the numbers on the European roulette wheel are laid out chronologically. This makes it easy for the player to find each of the numbers and, therefore, the bets they want to make. At the top of the table is the zero, a green number that is listed all by itself on a row. Underneath the zero, there are rows of numbers going down three columns, from 1 to 36. Each of these numbers alternates colors between being red or black, with a few exceptions. In total, there are 18 red numbers and 18 black numbers.

The red numbers are:
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 34, 36

The black numbers are:
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 29, 31, 33, 35

The outside bets are located physically outside of where the numbers are listed. There are boxes for each of these bets, which include the dozen numbers (1-12), the second dozen (13-24) and the third dozen (28-36). There are also boxes for numbers 1-18 and one for numbers 19-36, as well as for even numbers, odd numbers, red numbers and black numbers. At the bottom of the table are columns that correspond to the columns on the roulette table. The green zero number is not a part of any of the outside bets. Therefore, if the ball lands on the zero, all bets on any of the outside boxes will lose.

Choose a wheel strategy and play European roulette

European roulette is a great version of the ever-popular casino table game. Players love it not only because it’s easy to understand, but because they can basically start a new game with each spin of the wheel. If they don’t win on one spin, they can try their hand again quickly to win at the next spin. European roulette also doesn’t require a large wager to play, as the minimum wager amount is often lower at roulette than it is for some other casino table games. But perhaps the biggest reason players love European roulette is the big odds it can pay out on wins, especially on the 35-1 for a single number.
