The basic rules of the game

Like other versions of the game, French roulette has fairly simple rules. The game consists of two main parts, which are the roulette board and the roulette wheel. In this version of the game, there will be 37 numbers listed on the roulette board, and each of these numbers will have a color – either green, red or black. In addition to these boxes on the board, there are other boxes on the outside with corresponding bets, which we’ll expand on in a bit.

The wheel itself has a slot for each one of these numbers that’s found on the board. At the start of each turn, a dealer will spin both the wheel and a little ball. The slot that the ball lands in will determine what wagers on the board are winners and which ones are not. In French roulette, each spin of the wheel represents an independent game, with a new game starting after each spin.

French vs. American roulette

French roulette and American roulette have two main differences. The first is that there is only one green number in French roulette (zero), while in American roulette, there are two green numbers – zero and double zero. This means there are 37 total numbers in French roulette and 38 in American roulette. The wheels for both games are located in different areas in the Netent version. Finally, the layout of the outside numbers in both versions of the game are different, as are the names of some of the boxes. However, both games work the same in terms of what the outside bets represent.

Want a variety of bets? This game has them

If you’re looking for a game with variety, then French roulette is the game for you. There are a number of wagers to choose from, including bets on the “inside” or the “outside.” Inside bets are wagers on the numbers, while outside bets are wagers on categories or groups of numbers.

The odds for each type of inside bet are:

  • Straight-up bet: 31-1
  • Split bet: 17-1
  • Street bet: 11-1
  • Corner bet: 8-1
  • Line bet: 5-1

The odds for each type of outside bet are:

  • Column (1st, 2nd or 3rd): 2-1
  • A dozen (1st, 2nd or 3rd): 2-1
  • Even (Pair) or odd (Impair): 1-1
  • Red or black: 1-1
  • 1-18 (Manque) or 19-36 (Passe): 1-1

The player’s chances of winning at French roulette are the same as they are in European roulette, because there are the same amount of numbers and boxes. These chances are better than American roulette, though, which has one extra box.

The layout of the wheel is slightly different

There are 37 pockets on the roulette wheel in French roulette, each of which corresponds to a number/color that’s on the roulette table. What’s different about the layout is that the numbers are not listed chronologically. This makes it harder for the player to predict any patterns as to where the ball is landing from one spin to the next.

The sequence of numbers on a French roulette wheel, in clockwise order:
0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10,5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26

The table layout is simple

Unlike the roulette wheel, the roulette table in French roulette is laid out chronologically. The zero is listed at the top of the board all by itself. It is the only green number on the table. Below the zero, the rest of the numbers (1-36) are laid out chronologically in columns of three. Each of these numbers is either red or black, meaning there are 18 total red numbers and 18 total black numbers on the roulette table.

The red numbers are:
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 34, 36

The black numbers are:
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 29, 31, 33, 35

On the outside of the numbers are other boxes for bets. These are bets on a group of numbers. They include the 1st 12 (numbers 1-12), 2nd 12 (13-24) and 3rd 12 (28-36). There are also wager boxes for 1-18, 19-36, odd numbers, even numbers, black numbers and red numbers. At the very bottom of the table, there are three boxes – one for each column of numbers. The green zero is not a part of any of the outside bets. If the ball lands on the zero, all bets on any of the outside boxes will lose automatically.

Choose a solid wheel strategy

French roulette is a lot of fun to play, and a great game where you can choose a different wheel strategy from everyone else. It’s a simple real time game to understand and play, and can lead to some really great wins, especially if you wager on the 35-1 odds on a single number.
